Yom Nili July 12

Today in camp, we are learning about the Shmitta controversy. In the late 1880’s, many of the olim wanted to celebrate the laws that are focused on the Land of Israel, such as Shmitta. However, others felt like taking a year off of working the land would be detrimental to the growth and development of the land. The chanichim learned different approaches to dealing with Shmitta and about how Shmitta is celebrated today. One of the solutions in Shmitta is to grow produce in greenhouses above the ground. Today in our peula, the chanichim made balloon greenhouses and chia heads.
